Pre-opening compresses a year of operational build into a few months, and training is usually the part that gets pushed back because it feels less urgent than the building. It is not, because the opening date does not move but the readiness of the team does.
Ninety days out: the procedures
Write the procedures before you hire the people who will follow them. A department that arrives to no written standard invents one, and unwinding an invented standard later costs more than writing it now. Each procedure needs an owner, an approver and a review date from the start.
Sixty days out: the mandatory set
Fire safety, emergency response and the property induction assigned to every employee with a due date before the soft opening, not before the grand opening. Chemical safety before housekeeping touches a product. Food safety before the kitchen runs a test service.
Thirty days out: the departmental sequence
Each department completes its core sequence and runs its checklists on the real floor, not in a training room. A housekeeping team should have cleaned real rooms in the actual building before the first guest, including the rooms that are not finished yet.
Fourteen days out: the dry run
Run a full simulated day with staff acting as guests: arrivals, a restaurant service, a complaint, a maintenance call, and an evacuation drill. Every gap it exposes is a gap a guest would have found instead.
Before release
No room is released for sale with an open fire safety, electrical or water safety item, regardless of the opening date. That decision has to be made once, in writing, before there is pressure on it.
